In the summer of 2021, I had the opportunity to visit my cousin in Scottsdale, Arizona. During my trip, we hiked Camelback Mountain, participated in several Insomniac Nights Runs, relaxed tubing in the Salt River, and took a trip to San Diego, California.
During a visit to a thrift store, while sifting through old signs, clothes, and knick-knacks, I came across a section of old books. It was there that I discovered Confessions of an Economic Hit Man by John Perkins. After paying just 25 cents for the book, I began reading about how the United States engages in a modern form of economic slavery. This book argued that the U.S. uses the World Bank and other international organizations to offer massive loans to developing nations for construction projects. On the surface, this seems generous, but the loans come with a catch: the money is only granted if the country agrees to hire U.S. construction firms, ensuring that a select few people profit. Worse still, the loans are intentionally too large for these nations to repay, creating a debt burden that effectively forces them to align with U.S. political interests.
The Ukraine deal that Trump continues to advocate for brought to mind the strategies outlined in Confessions of an Economic Hit Man. Trump repeatedly asserted that he would offer security and financial assistance in the form of a loan, contingent upon President Zelensky permitting American companies to extract rare earth minerals. This arrangement seemed strikingly reminiscent of the tactics described in Perkins' book, where economic leverage is wielded to secure access to valuable resources, effectively binding nations to terms that benefit a select few. It almost appeared as though Trump were adhering to the principles of the economic hitman’s playbook.
Its a great read! If you want it lmk!
Side Story:
While reading my new book, we decided to hit San Diego for Fourth of July. On the way to San Diego, we passed by Trump’s border wall and witnessed the Colorado River. It felt as though the river was redirected, as if the United States was using it to demonstrate its power. In fact, the Colorado River has been diverted for irrigation projects like the Yuma Project and the Central Arizona Project.
